Gemfest Rubyvale & Sapphire
Gemfest Rubyvale is one of Emerald’s signature events, drawing visitors from across the Central Highlands and beyond. The premier Gemfields festival celebrates sapphire fossicking, gem cutting, jewellery making, and the unique culture of Australia’s sapphire capital.
About Gemfest Rubyvale
Gemfest transforms Rubyvale into a celebration of everything gemstone. Expect guided fossicking experiences, gem cutting demonstrations, jewellery-making workshops, geological talks, and market stalls selling rough and cut sapphires. Local artisan jewellers showcase their work. Underground mine tours run throughout the weekend. Food stalls and live entertainment create a festival atmosphere in this small country town.
The festival is the best introduction to the Sapphire Gemfields — condensing what might take days of independent exploration into an accessible weekend program. Whether you’re a serious collector or a curious first-timer, Gemfest offers something genuine.
Organised by local Gemfields community groups, this event has become a fixture on the Central Highlands calendar. The event typically attracts 2,000–4,000 visitors across the festival weekend visitors.
When & Where
When: Annually in August (typically the second weekend). Rubyvale is 45 minutes west of Emerald. Where: Rubyvale and surrounding Gemfields townships, Central Queensland Expected attendance: 2,000–4,000 visitors across the festival weekend
Why Attend
Gemfest is the most accessible way to experience the Gemfields. You’ll learn about sapphire geology, try fossicking with expert guidance, and browse the best selection of local sapphires in one place. It’s also a genuine community event — the Gemfields’ residents are proud of their heritage and love sharing it with visitors. For families with children, the guided experiences are perfectly pitched.
Getting There
Rubyvale is approximately 45 minutes west of Emerald via the Capricorn Highway and Gemfields Road. The drive is sealed and straightforward. Emerald Airport has daily flights from Brisbane. Many visitors base themselves in Emerald and drive to the festival daily.
Emerald Inn — Town-Side Base for Gemfest
Gemfest fills Rubyvale and Sapphire well beyond what the Gemfields can accommodate, which is why most visitors stay in Emerald and drive out. We are at 28–30 Esmond Street, on the town side of the highway turn-off, so you are heading west within a couple of minutes of leaving.
This is one of the dates worth booking early rather than close to the weekend. Fossicking and festival days are dusty work, so the washer-dryer in every apartment gets used, and the full kitchen means you are not queuing for dinner in a town of a few hundred people.
Stay with us: 28–30 Esmond Street, Emerald QLD 4720. Check availability or call (07) 4980 0600. Compare the three apartment types.
