Costs
Q: How much does fossicking cost? A: Site fees typically $20-40 per person for half-day or full-day access. Includes site access and usually basic equipment.
Q: Can I bring my own tools? A: Yes. Sites also provide basic equipment for those without their own.
What to Bring
Q: What equipment do I need? A: Sieves (various sizes), digging tools, brush, containers, water bottle, sunscreen, hat. Sturdy shoes or boots essential.
Best Time
Q: What’s the best time to fossick? A: May through September. Cooler temperatures make physical work comfortable. Summer is hot — early starts essential.
What You’ll Find
Q: What do rough sapphires look like? A: Small stones, often milky or cloudy, sometimes translucent blue. They don’t look like polished gemstones.
Q: Is gem-quality likely? A: Genuine gem-quality sapphires are found, but not in high proportion. Expect modest rough stones, not significant jewellery-quality finds.
Families
Q: Can children fossick? A: Yes, children aged 6+ generally enjoy it. Supervise around water and digging areas.
Selling Finds
Q: Can I sell rough sapphires? A: Yes, you own material you fossick. Local dealers in Gemfields towns can assess and purchase. Expectations should be modest.
Day Trip from Emerald
Q: Can I do fossicking as a day trip? A: Yes. Leave Emerald 8-8:30am, reach Gemfields by 10am, fossick until mid-afternoon, return by early evening.
Q: Should I base myself in Emerald or the Gemfields? A: Emerald offers better accommodation, dining, and services. Day tripping from Emerald makes practical sense.
