Staying in Emerald While Someone Is in Hospital

If you are reading this because someone you care about has been admitted to Emerald Hospital, this page is written for you rather than for a travel plan.

Nobody books this trip in advance. It usually starts with a phone call, a drive in from a property or a smaller town, and no clear idea of whether you are staying two nights or two weeks. What follows is the practical information, without the brochure.

Where we are

Emerald Inn is at 28–30 Esmond Street, in central Emerald, close to the hospital and within walking distance of the CBD, the chemist and the supermarkets. See getting to the hospital and where to park for the specifics.

Being central matters more than it sounds when you are doing several trips a day between a ward and a bed, and when you need a chemist at 8am or something hot at 7pm without a long drive at either end.

Arriving at an odd hour

Reception is open 7am to 7pm daily. If you cannot get here by 5pm, we call you and arrange a key lock-box with a code, so arriving at eleven at night after a long day is not a problem. You will not be locked out and you will not need to find someone.

If you are coming straight from the hospital and have not booked, phone (07) 4980 0600. It is quicker than a form.

Why self-contained helps in this situation

Every one of our 32 apartments has a full kitchen and its own washer and dryer. In an ordinary stay those are conveniences. In this one they tend to be the difference between coping and not:

• You can eat properly at whatever hour you get back, rather than working around a dining room or finding somewhere still open.
• You can keep food for someone who is barely eating — soup, something familiar, something they asked for.
• You can wash what you are wearing without leaving, which matters when a two-night stay quietly becomes ten.
• There is a separate living area in the Two Bedroom apartments, so relatives can share without everyone sitting on a bed. They sleep up to six.

Cots and rollaway beds are free if children are with you. Reverse-cycle air conditioning in every apartment, which is not a small thing in a Central Queensland summer.

Not knowing how long you need

This is the most common question we get from families, and the answer is that it is fine not to know.

Book what you are reasonably sure of and tell us the situation. Extensions are usually straightforward subject to availability, and if you tell us early we can generally keep you in the same apartment rather than moving you. If you need to leave sooner than planned, tell us and we will sort it out — we are not going to hold a grieving family to a cancellation policy designed for holiday bookings.

If the stay is going to run into weeks, ask about long-stay rates. They are worked out case by case.

Practical things people ask

Parking. Free undercover parking in the guest car park, included. Larger vehicles use the street parking around the property.

WiFi. High-speed, included, no caps — it carries video calls to family who could not travel.

Quiet. If you are sleeping at odd hours, say so when you book and we will position you away from the road and the car park, and hold housekeeping until you are up.

Pets. We do not accommodate pets, with the exception of assistance and support animals, which are welcome. If you have travelled in with a dog, tell us and we will point you at the alternatives rather than leave you to work it out.

Accessible apartments. We do not have a purpose-built accessible apartment. Please call before booking and we will be honest about whether a ground-floor apartment will suit.
