Why Winter Is the Best Season in the Central Highlands
May through August is objectively superior to other seasons for the majority of visitor activities in the Central Highlands.
Temperature: Daytime temperatures hover between 18-24°C. Genuinely perfect for activity — neither sweating nor shivering. Nights are cool (5-10°C) but manageable with a jumper.
Outdoor activities: Fossicking, hiking, birdwatching, and photography are all more comfortable. You can sustain physical activity for longer without heat exhaustion risk.
Carnarvon Gorge: Best in winter. Trails are dry, creek crossings are manageable, and the cool air makes the 6-8 hour main loop genuinely pleasant.
Fairbairn Dam: Cool mornings produce mist over the water — exceptional for photography. Birdlife is active. Comfortable for extended picnicking.
The catch: Winter is peak tourist season. Book accommodation ahead. Gemfields sites are busier. But the conditions more than compensate.
