Photography Guide to the Central Highlands

The Central Highlands offer genuinely excellent photography subjects. The landscape is diverse, the light is often dramatic, and the seasons create distinct visual opportunities.

Best subjects: Carnarvon Gorge offers towering canyon walls and water reflections. Fairbairn Dam provides wide-sky compositions with water and wildlife. Sunflower fields (February-March) are a pilgrimage for landscape photographers. The Gemfields’ rough terrain and fossicking activity offer documentary-style opportunities.

Light: The inland atmosphere creates distinctive colour at golden hour. Dust and mineral particles scatter light differently from coastal air. Early morning and late afternoon are essential for landscape work.

Seasons: Winter (May-August) offers the clearest skies, best visibility, and most comfortable shooting conditions. Summer brings dramatic storm clouds and green landscape but intense heat.
